The postponed USA MotoGP race has been officially cancelled for the 2020 season with the circuit releasing date for 2021 event.
The US MotoGP was set for April 3-5 weekend but had to be postponed to November 13-15 date due to COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, races in Mugello, Sachsenring, Assen, KymiRing, Silverstone, Twin Ring Motegi and Philip Island were cancelled.
Also, MotoGP announced 13 rounds with Jerez, Red Bull Ring, Misano, Aragon and Valencia hosting two races each, while Brno, Catalunya and Le Mans going with one each. Dorna Sports kept Circuit of the Americas, Sepang, Buriram and Argentina in open category.
However, COTA has now officially cancelled the 2020 MotoGP event with a new April 16-18 in 2021, as cases of COVID-19 has risen drastically in Austin, Texas. Interestingly, Dorna hasn’t released a statement but they are likely awaiting confirmation from Argentina.
Considering the travel involved, MotoGP would have wanted to stage both USA and Argentina rounds bunched up together but with the former pulling out, it is less likely that the latter happens. It remains to be seen, though.
The small statement from COTA said: “The Horsepower Rodeo will return next year for an even bigger and better MotoGP Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas on April 16-18, 2021! This year’s event on November 13-15, 2020 has been canceled. Ticket holders will receive an email with further information.”
While COTA has cancelled its MotoGP event, the F1 side remains to be confirmed as well. The series is also looking to club USA, Mexico and Brazil together if possible but with COVID-19 cases rising in all three places, it is more of a headache.
