Mercedes has taken a significant lead in the Constructors’ Championship for Formula 1 in 2026, with a 145-point advantage over its closest competitors. The team’s head, Toto Wolff, stated that this difference provides a «good margin» that allows them to focus on the development of the car for 2027.
After going through complicated moments in the ground effect era, the German team has shown great dominance under the new 2026 rules, leading both the Constructors’ Championship and the Drivers’ Championship with Kimi Antonelli.
So far, Mercedes has won 10 of the 14 races this season, although competitors like Ferrari and McLaren have made significant improvements to their cars. The German team introduced updates at the Canadian Grand Prix in May and plans to implement a new package of improvements at the next Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. In the meantime, they have introduced small circuit-specific modifications, although the pace of innovation has not been the same as that of their rivals.
Wolff confirmed that the team has already begun to reallocate resources to focus on next year’s car. «Work for 2027 began some time ago, before the summer,» he declared after Antonelli won the first Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madring circuit. «During the summer we shifted resources towards next year, and this will continue as planned, regardless of our position in the championship.»
In the current situation, Mercedes’ position in the championship seems secure, with Ferrari far from being able to recover lost ground, and despite McLaren’s advances with two victories from Lando Norris, the task seems insurmountable.
Despite this good moment, Wolff remains cautious about his team’s prospects in the 2026 season. «Everything can change quickly with a crash or a retirement, and what seemed like a good margin can disappear in no time,» he stated. «That’s why our goal is to ignore the points until it becomes mathematically impossible for the rivals to win and to focus on each race.»
For the upcoming Malaysian Grand Prix, Mercedes has a «solid» update prepared. Wolff expressed confidence that the new parts will be effective, although he acknowledged that often new introductions do not work as expected. «We hope they do and bring us up to the level of others in terms of updates,» he concluded.
