Kyle Kirkwood, driver for the Andretti Global team, has secured a notable third place during the Honda Indy 200 race held at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, which has allowed him to regain the second position in the championship standings.
Starting from the tenth position with his #27 vehicle, the young driver from Florida faced a grueling 90-lap race without incidents on the 13-turn, 2.258-mile circuit. With temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius, the race became an intense physical challenge, as drivers did not enjoy any moments of respite to recover from the heat.
This has been Kirkwood’s fourth podium of the season, bringing his total to ten in his professional career, marking his first at a conventional IndyCar circuit. “It has been one of the most physically demanding days I’ve ever experienced in the car. I’m exhausted right now,” Kirkwood remarked, highlighting how the weather conditions and the challenging nature of the track played a key role in the final outcome.
The driver acknowledged that his advancement was due to a combination of smart strategies during pit stops and a good start, although he admitted he felt disappointed with his performance in Saturday’s qualifying. “We moved from the tenth position to third thanks to close collaboration within the team and some good decisions. Today we proved that we can recover to the front positions,” he noted.
With seven races remaining in the season, Kirkwood is now 56 points behind leader Alex Palou, with a total of 348 points. Despite a challenging season, the gradual increase in his points over the last three events is starting to bear fruit, and his performance at Mid-Ohio is a clear indication of his progress.
Historically, Kirkwood has been very competitive at Mid-Ohio, with eight victories in nine outings during his time in lower categories, but his previous experiences in IndyCar had been tough. Now, with a good foundation in the team and a strong race strategy, it seems he is regaining his best performance.
