Hamilton opines about COVID-19 handling in UK, ongoing protests

Lewis Hamilton, F1

Mercedes F1 driver Lewis Hamilton has now spoken about the handling of COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom and also the on-going protests.

Ever since the death of George Floyd in the United States of America and the subsequent protests in the country and everywhere else – including UK – Hamilton has been quite vocal about the multiple topics, with able support of Mercedes and Toto Wolff.

As Hamilton returns to UK ahead of the two-day F1 test at Silverstone in Mercedes W09, the British driver has now opined about the handling of COVID-19 pandemic in the country along with the ongoing protests against police brutality and racism.

“I’m appalled at the UK government on how they have handled Covid-19,” wrote Hamilton.  “You should have closed the borders two months ago. How you can let people fly in from countries without being tested is baffling. You could have saved thousands of lives.

“We need better leaders. Watching the news today regarding the statue torn down yesterday.  If those people hadn’t taken down that statue, honouring a racist slave trader, it would never have been removed. There’s talks of it going into a museum.

“That man’s statue should stay in the river just like the 20 thousand African souls who died on the journey here and thrown into the sea, with no burial or memorial. He stole them from their families, country and he must not be celebrated.

“It should be replaced with a memorial for all those he sold, all those that lost their lives. To those of you are protesting, please still be careful and wear a mask, use hand sanitizer. There is still very much a risk of getting COVID and we don’t want to keep it spreading.

“So please be safe and take care of yourselves and others,” summed up Hamilton. The Brit has been sharing more on his Instagram. His initial thoughts pushed F1 and fellow drivers to take a stand against racism as well, where most united in their opinion.

Hamilton will be in action for the first time since the Barcelona F1 winter test on Wednesday when he drives the Mercedes W09 at Silverstone, a day after teammate Valtteri Bottas. The team uploaded a fire-up video of the car.
