The constructors’ title of the World Rally Championship (WRC) achieved by Toyota has been described as «incredible» by its deputy director, Juha Kankkunen. This milestone was reached after the race in Chile last weekend, where the Japanese brand secured its tenth crown, thus equaling the records of Lancia, recognized as one of the most successful brands in the history of rally.
Toyota’s dominance in the WRC has become evident, with this victory being the sixth consecutive one since 2021, leaving two rounds of the 2026 season to compete. The brand had previously won the title on four other occasions: in 1993, 1994, 1999, and 2018.
The GR Yaris has been the most efficient vehicle since the start of the current Rally1 rules in 2022, with a total of 56 victories in 77 races held so far. The previous record for constructors’ titles belonged to Lancia, which remained at the forefront with 10 titles obtained over three decades.
Kankkunen, who oversaw Toyota’s successes in 2025 and 2026, played a key role in securing the titles of 1993 and 1994. Now, the four-time world champion highlights the importance of the current moment for the team. «This is a great achievement, and I am very proud to contribute both as a driver and as part of the management team,» Kankkunen states.
Toyota’s president, Akio Toyoda, also acknowledged the successful season of his drivers. «Takamoto Katsuta won two consecutive races in the first part of the year, while Elfyn Evans and Sébastien Ogier each secured two victories,» Toyoda commented. At the same time, he expresses his satisfaction that Oliver Solberg and Elliott Edmondson were finally able to secure their second win of the year in Chile.
