Sergio Pérez has shared that his return to Formula 1 with Cadillac has been driven by the desire to prove that he remains ‘one of the best’ drivers in the championship. This decision comes after a difficult career finish with the Red Bull team, which marked his period with moments of great mental pressure.

After taking a sabbatical year to recover from those months he described as ‘toxic’, the Mexican driver has returned to the grid for the 2026 season with the North American team in formation.

A new beginning

In a recent interview on the High Performance podcast, Pérez expressed his excitement for the Cadillac project: ‘When they presented the project to me, I thought about the magnitude of the brand. Upon meeting Dan Towriss, I realized he is a very competitive person, willing to do whatever it takes to elevate the team to a good level.’

The driver is determined to prove his worth, stating: ‘I want to be part of this project and show that I am one of the best. I have always believed that I have this potential, but the period with Red Bull affected me and made me lose confidence.’

The path ahead

Pérez finds himself at a starting point for the Cadillac team and acknowledges the challenges they face. Although the team is still searching for its identity, he is optimistic about their long-term future. ‘It is very early to make a definitive assessment. We are only in our sixth race, but there is a culture being built. I am convinced that the owners will do everything possible to achieve it,’ he added.

With the support of General Motors and TWG, two powerful forces in the automotive industry, Pérez is confident that the team will continue to grow and improve as the season progresses.
