Toto Wolff, the director of the Formula 1 team Mercedes, has expressed that he prefers to have a fast but unreliable car over a slow and reliable machine. Nevertheless, he has acknowledged that it is time to resolve the mechanical problems affecting their vehicles.

So far, Mercedes has dominated the 2026 season, achieving all nine pole positions in the races, although they have lost to McLaren and Ferrari in some qualifying sessions. However, the team has only won seven of the nine races held.

Recently, in the Barcelona Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton secured victory after an electrical problem retired Kimi Antonelli from the race while in second place. This situation was repeated during the Canadian Grand Prix, where a similar incident caused George Russell to retire while he was leading the race.

In the last race, at the British Grand Prix, a problem with Antonelli’s wheel cover prevented him from competing effectively against another standout driver, Charles Leclerc.

Wolff was questioned about whether these reliability issues were a consequence of an extremely aggressive driving style and whether it would be necessary to moderate the performance of the vehicles. He responded: ‘We are an organization focused on performance; in the aspects of the chassis and the engine, we want to take advantage of every last detail.’

Additionally, he added that it is preferable to adjust the performance to solve reliability issues rather than the other way around. Due to the circumstances, the team has achieved a better distance covered during the races than most of its rivals, only surpassed by Ferrari, accumulating 5,215 km out of the possible 5,408 km.

At the bottom of the standings, Aston Martin has completed 3,753 km, achieving eight race finishes out of the 18 possible, although it has recently shown significant improvements in its performance with the Honda engine.
