George Russell has shared his frustration after the qualifying session for the Brazilian Grand Prix, where poor communication with the Mercedes team cost him the pole position, which was ultimately secured by Lando Norris.

Despite Russell starting with a five-place grid penalty for an engine change, the importance of finishing in a good position was clear to him, as he wanted to end the season on a positive note before next year.

The damp conditions at the Interlagos circuit provided Russell with an ideal opportunity. In the third qualifying round (Q3), he set a time that temporarily placed him in first position, pulling four tenths clear of Norris’s time.

His race engineer, Marcus Dudley, urged him to keep pushing, warning about the arrival of more rain: ‘Push if you can, I think we will have one more lap before the rain comes.’ While trying to overtake Alex Albon, the situation became complicated. Russell asked for clarification over the radio: ‘You need to tell me, what am I doing? Am I stopping or what?’.

The indication he received was that he could brake, but with an unclear response, Russell lost time. Just at that moment, Norris managed to set a better time and snatched the pole from Russell. The disappointment was palpable, and he expressed himself: ‘Mate, you told me to brake. What the hell!’.

After the session, Russell tried to mitigate the situation, acknowledging it was a misunderstanding and that the decisions made during qualifying needed to be analyzed. ‘We knew that losing the pole was a mistake. The rain fell more heavily just after my lap.’

Toto Wolff, the team principal, defended the decision, stating that it is not always possible to predict with certainty how the weather situation on track will evolve. ‘If we had a crystal ball that helped us decide, it would be a great advantage,’ he said.

Russell, with his sights set on the race on Sunday, hopes the conditions will be similar to those in qualifying, stating that he felt very comfortable with the car in the rain. Despite the frustration, he maintained confidence in his speed and looked forward to a good result in the race.
