The head of the Haas team, Ayao Komatsu, has explained the reasons that led to giving Rafael Camara the opportunity to debut in Formula 1 during the Brazilian Grand Prix, instead of retaining Japanese driver Ryo Hirakawa on the grid. Komatsu stated that his decision was based ‘purely on professionalism.’
According to Komatsu’s words, this choice does not imply that Hirakawa is unprofessional, but rather that it was a matter of interest for the team. ‘I have sought the best for the team,’ he said, reaffirming his responsibility as team principal.
Hirakawa had the opportunity to drive in the Mexican Grand Prix as a reserve driver, filling in for Esteban Ocon after a controversy. Although he was a few seconds slower than his teammate Oliver Bearman, he managed to score points thanks to penalties imposed on other rivals during the race.
Camara, who is the new signing for Haas for 2027, outperformed Hirakawa in a previous test. Camara’s positive energy and his performance, in which he showed a great ability to handle pressure, decisively influenced the final decision.
The team director expressed that, despite not knowing Camara well, his performance during the test in Portimao was very promising. His ability to concentrate and manage changing circuit conditions gave the team leaders the necessary confidence to make this bet.
Komatsu pointed out that when it comes to making difficult decisions, his priority is always the well-being of the team. Today, with the future of the Formula 1 calendar up in the air, Haas’s head has stated that no decisions have yet been made regarding the last races of the season.
