The recent NASCAR Cup competition in San Diego has been notable for its unique logistics, especially the requirement for a self-sufficient power supply for all race operations.

The event, held at the historic Naval Air Station North Island, featured the Anduril 250 Race the Base, and it was crucial that no aspect interfered with the operational availability of the military base.

Logistics and innovative solutions

The circuit design was done respecting the perimeter of the base and avoiding that civilian entry would become problematic. Fans were placed in the westernmost perimeter of the facility, while all energy needs for the competition could not come from the North Island electric grid.

This led to a collaboration with ABB to develop a sustainable and viable solution. They implemented a network of microgrids, as explained by Chris Shigas, vice president of ABB.

Microgrids and sustainability

Shigas defined a microgrid as an autonomous power system that integrates generation, transmission, and distribution of energy. In the absence of conventional energies, the new installation consisted of 30 Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and traditional diesel generators that were activated only two hours a day during the weekend.

This technology was born during city races of the Cup Series in Chicago from 2023 to 2025, and now allows NASCAR to deploy a ‘mobile city’ wherever needed.

Long-term sustainability goals

Eric Nyquist, NASCAR’s Impact Director, highlighted the importance of sticking to their goals with a sustainable approach, which includes a commitment to net-zero operational emissions by 2035. Initiatives include transitioning to renewable energy sources and using low-carbon bioethanol fuels.

The weekend in San Diego served to demonstrate that the competition can maintain its essence while being more sustainable, as Nyquist concluded: ‘The improvements we seek will not affect the quality of the competition.’

Transparency and real-time data

The public was able to see real-time sustainability data thanks to the installation by ABB, which included a platform with multiple screens and live videos. This transparency aims to increase awareness about NASCAR’s operations and their commitment to sustainability.

The organizers will showcase these advancements in future races, reinforcing the commitment to inform fans about data-driven decisions within the world of racing.
