The Gresini Racing rider, Fermin Aldeguer, will have to undergo surgery after suffering a fracture in his right hand during a disastrous weekend at the Indonesian Grand Prix.
A year after achieving his first and only victory in the competition at this same race, Aldeguer’s defense has been far from successful. On Friday, he fell twice, forcing him to compete from Q1. Although he managed to qualify for Q2, he could not avoid a new fall that relegated him to sixth place on the grid.
The race started promisingly, as Aldeguer climbed up to fourth place, but the drama came on lap two, when he went down at turn 16. After the competition, it was confirmed that the rider had suffered a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal in his right hand and would need surgery.
Aldeguer will fly to Barcelona immediately this Sunday to undergo surgery. The good news is that he has a two-week margin until the next Grand Prix, which will be held in Phillip Island, Australia.
Furthermore, this is not the first incident Aldeguer has faced this season; he had already been limping due to a femur fracture he experienced during a pre-season test, and a new injury at Assen caused him to miss three races mid-season.
