The sporting director of Gresini Racing, Michele Masini, has expressed confidence that competition between factory teams and satellite teams will remain “more or less” equal in the new 850cc era of MotoGP that will begin in 2027. This transformation involves a substantial technical change with a reduction in engine capacity, aerodynamic restrictions, and the prohibition of suspension control devices.
The switch from Michelin to Pirelli for tires adds a new layer of complexity to the competition, marked as a revolutionary moment in the category. Several manufacturers have already started testing their 850cc bikes since last year, which could influence their preparation for the new season.
Despite the challenges posed by these new regulations, satellite teams will also seek to quickly adapt to the new specifications of the bikes and tires. Gresini, which will compete with a factory Ducati bike, has dismissed concerns about a possible disadvantage for satellite teams. Masini stated that teams will be able to leverage their knowledge of Pirelli tires to gain an initial advantage.
“I believe the level of competition will remain similar to what it is currently,” explained Masini. “Tire management will be crucial, and satellite teams could be better at this management compared to some factory teams if they quickly understand how the new tires work.”
Gresini assures that the technical support it receives from Ducati will not be affected by the regulatory changes. “The collaboration does not change because we work very closely together every GP weekend,” commented Masini.
With this restart in the rules, Gresini sees a great opportunity to stand out. They have won at least one race each year since their split from Aprilia five years ago, and Masini is excited about the possibilities that the changes present.
With the start of the new championship, all teams will compete with bikes designed in accordance with the new rules, and the situation will be the same for everyone regarding their initial specifications. However, the updates that factory teams may receive before the satellite teams will represent a key aspect in the development of the season.
Gresini recently tested its 850cc bike for the first time, and Masini hopes that the pre-season tests in Sepang in February will provide a better understanding of the new Pirelli tires.
