The FIA has suspended F1 Canadian GP steward Derek Warwick for his media comments, but since he has apologised, he will return in Austrian GP.
The FIA has informed about a stewards change for F1 Canadian GP weekend after suspending long-time steward Warwick over ‘unauthorised media comments’. The decision seemingly took place before the weekend start as the Brit was never named as one of the stewards in the pre-race preview.
Dr. Gerd Ennser was named the head steward for the F1 Canadian GP weekend, with the support of Matthew Selley, Enrique Bernoldi and Marcel Demers, which means the FIA already suspended Warwick and placed Bernoldi in his position. They waited couple of days to inform the media.
Bernoldi, however, is not present in person but will officiate from the remote office in Geneva. Much like few other events, the FIA has a fifth steward for the weekend i.e Natalie Corsmit. They usually work remotely and this weekend, she will have a regular steward alongside her at the FIA base.
Warwick is only suspended for the Canadian GP weekend, as the FIA notes that he will return to officiate in Austrian GP after having apologised for his comments. It seems like a similar case where Johnny Herbert was dropped from the panel after his comments on a betting site.
Warwick too made several comments after the grand prix in Barcelona relating to the Max Verstappen and George Russell incident along with Red Bull driver situation, Cadillac line-up and more. “Following recent unauthorised media comments, the FIA has taken the decision to suspend Derek Warwick from his duties as driver steward for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix,” the note said.
“He will be replaced by Enrique Bernoldi who will be officiating from the Remote Operations Centre in Geneva for the remainder of the event. After discussion, Derek acknowledges that his comments were ill-advised in his role as an FIA steward and has apologised. Derek will resume his duties as a steward in the forthcoming Austrian Grand Prix.”
