George Russell claimed top spot in FP2 of F1 Canadian GP ahead of Lando Norris and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, as Charles Leclerc was forced to miss the session.
After his FP1 hit, Leclerc was forced to miss FP2 in F1 Canadian GP after Ferrari needed to change the survival cell which was damaged in the incident. The second session caught out Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll after he brushed the wall heavy at Turn 7 to break his left suspension and end his run.
He was trying to get back into the pits but was requested not to. Much like FP1, the FP2 session saw several moments, whether it was the final corner cut or grass run or at the hairpin. The McLaren pair had several moments in the final corner when they had to cut it off.
The list included Russell, Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Alexander Albon, while Fernando Alonso had to run over the grass. Yuki Tsunoda, meanwhile, together with Hamilton had a moment at the hairpin, which was misery for the Japanese, who was on a fast lap on the soft compound.
The impeding and traffic scene hurt a lot of the drivers too, where Alpine’s Franco Colapinto was investigated but cleared off impeding Visa Cash App RB’s Liam Lawson. The Kiwi wanted to deliberately block certain drivers in frustration, but was denied by his race engineer.
Colapinto had another spin at Turn 1 and scary moment against Albon in the final corner. Amid all this, Mercedes’ Russell ended up on top in FP2 of F1 Canadian GP after a 1m12.123s lap on the medium compound. McLaren’s Norris was only 0.028s off, but he needed few laps to get close to him.
Antonelli made it Mercedes 1-3, as Williams’ Albon continued his fine run in fourth. The Thai too set his best time on the medium tyre on second run. The lone Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fifth from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who couldn’t improve like Norris on his second attempt.
Williams’ Carlos Sainz was seventh from Hamilton, Verstappen and Lawson in the Top 10. The Dutchman also set his time on the medium tyre. Lawson’s teammate Isack Hadjar was 11th, who was frustrated by one of the Saubers. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly was 12th from the pair of Sauber cars.
It was Bortoleto ahead of Nico Hulkenberg. There was a late incident involving the Brazilian and Albon, who went wide at the final corner when turning in, with the former on the inside and the latter on the outside, playing games. Red Bull’s Tsunoda could only manage 15th in the end.
He led the pair of Haas where Oliver Bearman finished ahead of Esteban Ocon in 16th and 17th, as Colpainto rounded out the 18 runners to set a lap time. In a close standing, the Top 16 drivers ended up within a second of Russell’s time, with Bearman only 0.967s behind.
