The FIA has granted F2 racer Arvid Lindblad superlicense to test in F1 despite not attaining 18-years of age after request made by Red Bull.

Lindblad is currently competing in F2 with Campos Racing as a rookie and is firmly in the title fight by placing himself third in the drivers’ standings after six rounds. The British youngster of Swedish and Indian heritage is one of the front-runners to make it in F1 for Red Bull.

He has earned praise from both Christian Horner and Helmut Marko. He should be next in line for a F1 shot at Visa Cash App RB. In order to do so, Red Bull requested for an early superlicense for Lindblad, before he attains 18-years of age August 8 of this year.

Lindblad has tested F1 already, but the superlicense is mostly for him to get to run in one of the FP1 sessions as per the FIA rule. Both Red Bull and Visa Cash App RB have to grant two sessions each of their drivers, which will equal to eight across the two teams.

Isack Hadjar has already fulfilled one side, while Ayumu Iwasa did one as well, leaving five more sessions to go. With Lindblad securing the superlicense, the British driver is likely to undertake at least one session if not all or a couple. It is not clear if he can run a full weekend at this juncture.

Max Verstappen is on the bubble for a race ban being on 11 penalty points. He has to get through June, but even after that he will have nine under his name for few months. This may open up a chance for the likes of Lindblad if Red Bull is bold enough and if he impresses them in the FP1 session.

“The FIA has received a request to grant a Super Licence to Arvid Lindblad prior to his 18th birthday,” wrote FIA in a statement. “After considering the information presented in support of this request, the World Council found that the driver has recently and consistently demonstrated outstanding ability and maturity in single-seater formula car competition and therefore approved the request.”
