In a memorable weekend for Aprilia, the team has achieved a new maximum speed record in MotoGP, thanks to Jorge Martin, who reached an impressive speed of 368.6 km/h during the free practice session 2 at Mugello.

This figure surpasses the previous record of 366.1 km/h, which had been set by Brad Binder and Pol Espargaro in the 2023 and 2024 editions of the Italian Grand Prix. Martin’s teammate, Marco Bezzecchi, also demonstrated the brand’s strength, equaling the speed during the afternoon sprint race, which resulted in a 1-2 for Aprilia.

However, there is still one day of action left on the Tuscan track, and the Aprilia team is aware that they could reach new heights. Technical engineer, Fabiano Sterlacchini, pointed out that wind conditions could make it easier for a rider to reach or exceed 370 km/h. “I don’t rule it out,” he declared, emphasizing the importance of airflow and slipstreaming to enable this improvement.

Mugello, with its long straight, provides the ideal setting for setting new speed records, and the mark achieved in this Grand Prix could remain intact for a long time, as a reduction in engine capacity from 1000cc to 850cc is expected starting in 2027.

The teams have downplayed the significance of this record after leaving Mugello, but Sterlacchini has confessed that it is one of the team’s goals: “Yes, it is one of our objectives. It is very exciting to achieve the highest record of all time.”

In the competition, KTM could be about to reclaim the record during the race, with Enea Bastianini (Tech3) showing a notable speed of 367.3 km/h before his retirement.
