Lando Norris, McLaren driver, has claimed that Ferrari has the best chassis in the new 2026 Formula 1 season, despite Mercedes’ dominant victory at the Australian Grand Prix.

The race in Melbourne has reinforced the competitive order that was already observed during the preseason tests, with Mercedes as the benchmark, and Ferrari as its closest rival. The pace difference between the two teams became particularly evident during the qualifying sessions, although Ferrari failed to make the most of its opportunities during the race.

Norris’s comments on Ferrari’s performance seem to focus on the effectiveness of the SF-26 chassis, which, according to him, offers surprising cornering speeds. “Based on what we’ve observed, it’s clear they have the best car,” Norris said in post-race statements.

Despite finishing fifth, after being pressured by Max Verstappen, who came from the back of the grid, Norris highlights that McLaren’s current situation is far from what they need to compete. “We’re light-years away, and we need to work hard to understand and learn for the rest of the season,” he added.

With the Chinese Grand Prix on the horizon, Norris’s statements present an interesting picture regarding the competition and the challenges that still lie ahead to reach the top tier of F1.
