Mercedes continued its charge with Lewis Hamilton heading F1 70th Anniversary GP FP3 from Valtteri Bottas and Mclaren’s Lando Norris.
It was a steady run in FP3 of F1 70th Anniversary GP at Silverstone with Mercedes’ Hamilton heading the way with 1m26.621s from Bottas (1m26.784s) as McLaren’s Norris slotted in third with a 1m27.202s on the medium compound.
Late in the session, the Brit did come in the way of Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo, who was on a quicker lap. The Racing Point duo, meanwhile, ended up fourth and fifth with Nico Hulkenberg (1m27.256s) ahead of Lance Stroll (1m27.263s).
The Canadian to see the stewards after blocking Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, when the Dutchman was on a quicker lap. He went around the second time but only manage to be seventh with a 1m27.455s, behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc (1m27.328s).
The second lap from Verstappen helped him to finish ahead of his Red Bull teammate Alexander Albon (1m27.474s), who was eighth from Renault’s Esteban Ocon (1m27.496s) and McLaren’s Carlos Sainz (1m27.627s) in the Top 10.
The F1 70th Anniversary GP FP3 session was the first for McLaren to use the medium compound in the weekend as Ferrari were the only other to run it in the session. The Italian outfit also ran the hard compound, which the Haas duo did as well.
AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly (1m27.659s), meanwhile, missed a place in the top half to be 11th with teammate Daniil Kvyat (1m27.754s) 12th from Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel (1m27.811s), who had a second engine fitted after FP2 troubles.
Ferrari also changed the PU for Leclerc. Ricciardo ended up only 14th on his second attempt with a 1m27.815s as Haas’ Romain Grosjean (1m28.076s) was 15th ahead of the Williams’ duo of Nicholas Latifi (1m28.125s) and George Russell (1m28.349s).
The Top 20 was eventually rounded out by Alfa Romeo Racing’s Antonio Giovinazzi (1m28.468s), Kimi Raikkonen (1m28.538s) and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen (1m28.763s), with the Dane having a wide moment too.
