With the first line of the grid without the usual drivers, the first DTM race of the weekend started in Lausitzring. Lucas Auer and Phillipp Eng were in the first positions and they tried to defend their positions of privilege and also fought for the first position at the first turn.
From behind the mess started. Nico Muller stalled his Audi at the start and his brand team mate, Jamie Green could not avoid the Swiss driver and impacted with the back of the R8. As a result,both of them had to abandon the race. The safety car had to come out because the all the track was cover of carbon fibre and both cars had to be removed of the track. Also, the orange Audi of Green had leak oil on the asphalt.
However, the big crash would happen at the restart of the race. When the safety car entered in the pit lane and the green flag was waving. The Audi of the champion, René Rast, literally flew over the grass of Lausitzring. The safety car had to come out again, after touch with Loic Duval. Finally the red flag was on until the Audi were removed of the track, Rast had o go to the hospitality.

The restart was 22 minutes before the chequered flag, with the stops on pit still to make. A quick race with a compulsory pitt. While Daniel Juncadella was the last but one, had a penalty, a drive through, for not following the safety car, a penalty which complicated his options in the race.
In this scenario, most of them started to pit and the fights began. Specially, there was a fight to the first place. The main candidates for the victory were Eng, Mortara, Auer and Glock , in absence of pit of Frijns and Eriksson that were the virtual leaders. Seem that the winner would be the BMW driver, Eng.
However, at the end Mortara and Glock were the ones that help the Italian driver of Mercedes to win, after the Audi drama of Lausitzring, ahead of the two BMW drivers. The Italian drivers obtained his first victory in the German competition with the silver arrow brand.
