The retired Formula 1 driver, David Coulthard, has shared his impression of Kimi Raikkonen‘s approach to the development of his son, Robin Raikkonen, who has recently signed with the Red Bull junior team. Coulthard claims this style resembles the method used by Jos Verstappen to prepare his son, Max Verstappen, in his early years of competition.

The registration of Robin in the Red Bull driver development program was announced recently, and this choice highlights the group’s interest in new motorsport talents. Coulthard points out that Raikkonen is adopting a very active approach, relocating his family to Italy to be closer to the go-kart tracks where Robin trains daily.

In a recent interview on the Up To Speed podcast, the former McLaren driver commented: ‘He is shining in karting. The family has fully committed. They live near the track so they can practice every day.’ He also emphasized the importance of proper development for a young driver.

Coulthard highlighted that, although karting may seem like good preparation, the transition to competition with four-wheeled vehicles is a different challenge. ‘There is a different dynamic between karts and cars, with suspensions and downforce that completely change the experience,’ he admitted.

Regarding Robin’s qualities, Coulthard expressed his impression of the young driver’s humility, emphasizing that it is an important attitude in the competitive world. Nevertheless, he warned that the transformations adolescents go through can affect their careers; ‘Maturity in young people can transform their focus and determination in competition,’ he concluded.
