In the recent Dutch Grand Prix, Liam Lawson left a positive impression on Red Bull Racing after stepping in for Isack Hadjar, who is recovering from a hand injury.
The 24-year-old New Zealander achieved a commendable seventh position after starting from eighth, and took advantage of an incident with Max Verstappen to gain a position. During the race, Lawson displayed a swift and effective adaptation, managing to qualify just a tenth behind Verstappen’s time during qualifying.
Laurent Mekies, head of Red Bull, acknowledged that it is a significant challenge for any driver to make the jump from a team like Racing Bulls to Red Bull. Nevertheless, Mekies felt that Lawson did everything possible during the race, extracting the most from his car.
Lawson faced some difficulties in the race, including a 10-second penalty for not reducing speed under a yellow flag. Despite this, he finished one lap ahead of the eighth-placed driver, Nico Hülkenberg, highlighting his competitiveness in a tough moment.
«Today’s race was complicated. The early meters were exciting, but then we found ourselves struggling for speed to match the front teams,» Lawson commented. This was his first stint with Red Bull since the beginning of last season, aiming to keep improving his performances.
The uncertainty about whether he will return to race with Racing Bulls in Monza persists, but his performance in Zandvoort has opened up new possibilities in his career.
