Formula 1’s six days of pre-season testing has come to an end, with the long-anticipated 2022 season all set to get underway at the Bahrain GP, but before that we have some F1 stats to churn.
The first three days of the six days of total pre-season running took place around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain. Officially dubbed a shakedown by F1, the three days of on-track running gave the ten teams critical track time to gather valuable data, observe their rivals and learn the nuances of the new cars that couldn’t be noticed during simulations.
The shockwaves of the beginning of the Russia and Ukraine conflict took centre stage on days two and three, as it forced the cancellation of the Russian Grand Prix, the first of two new redesigned Haas liveries, and eventually the termination of Haas’ Uralkali sponsorship, Nikita Mazepin’s drive and the Russian Grand Prix’s F1 deal altogether.
Haas would also experience freight delays out of their control for the official test in Bahrain. The team were subsequently handed additional running time on a morning and in the evening, hiring Kevin Magnussen to replace Mazepin.
Reliability problems for Alfa Romeo in Barcelona looked to have been contained in Bahrain, with the Hinwil-based outfit showing a smattering of pace. McLaren displayed almighty consistency and pace in Barcelona, but suffered extensive brake cooling issues in the hotter Bahrain climate – whilst Daniel Ricciardo failed to even attend the Barcelona test due to illness, which was later diagnosed as COVID-19.
At the front, Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull continued to chip away the laps with both the F1 drivers, while AlphaTauri joined the party too along with Aston Martin. Much like McLaren, Williams dropped a bit after the fire on Day 2 in Bahrain.
