James Vowles, the team principal of Williams, has acknowledged that the current development rate of the car is not sufficient to meet the team’s goals in Formula 1. Following a complicated British Grand Prix, the team has initiated an intense two-week review to assess its upgrade program.
In a recent episode of The Vowles Verdict, Vowles commented on the latest improvements introduced at the Silverstone circuit. Although the team presented new components during the race, he admitted that the overall performance was not as expected to compete in the higher places on the grid.
“Right now, it’s clear that our capacity to deliver performance to the car is not enough to move forward,” Vowles explained. To address this situation, Williams has started a review of the upgrades implemented between the British Grand Prix and the Belgian Grand Prix, which will take place at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit from July 17 to 19.
“The first step is to ensure that we fully understand not only what we did at Silverstone but also what we have achieved throughout the season,” he added. Vowles highlighted that each activity has clues about what has worked and what has not, and that the strategy for the upcoming grands prix will depend on the careful analysis of these results.
The director emphasized that his team is in a constant improvement process and praised the culture of transparency and learning that exists within Williams. Currently, the team is in eighth place in the Constructors’ Championship with 11 points, after nine races in the 2026 season.
