Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing driver and current world champion, has shared his vision on how to improve Formula 1 in a recent appearance on the podcast P1 with Matt & Tommy. In this program, he revealed which rule he would change to transform the current competition.
Verstappen, known for his honesty, suggested re-implementing atmospheric V8 engines instead of the complicated V6 turbo-hybrids that currently dominate the category. According to him, this change would not only bring back the famous roar of the engines, but also help solve the weight and handling problems affecting current vehicles.
“Let’s change the engine to a V8,” he stated emphatically, highlighting that this type of engine is lighter and more fun to drive. Verstappen believes this change would address various issues related to modern driving.
In addition to the motor proposal, Verstappen criticized the current overtaking system, the Drag Reduction System (DRS), which has been used since 2011 to facilitate overtakes. Instead, he proposed an overtaking boost system in pure IndyCar style, which would allow drivers to manage their overtaking opportunities more actively.
“If you need a small battery for the overtaking boost, then we don’t need the DRS,” he explained, arguing that this approach would provide more control to drivers during overtaking maneuvers. With this vision, Verstappen hopes to contribute to a future where the passion for competition returns to a central role within Formula 1.
In the current landscape, where changes in regulations and the push for more sustainable vehicles are increasingly present, Verstappen’s proposal stands out as a call to return to the roots and make Formula 1 a more exciting experience for both drivers and fans.
