In a recent interview on the podcast P1 with Matt & Tommy, the Dutch Formula 1 driver, Max Verstappen, expressed his opinion on the reforms that the competition needs. With the perspective of the new regulations for 2026, which seek better sustainability and efficiency, Verstappen fears that the direction taken is incorrect.
The world champion revealed that if he could modify one rule of Formula 1, he would immediately replace the V6 turbo hybrid engines with atmospheric V8 engines. Verstappen points out that his preference is not only due to nostalgia for the sound of the engines, but he believes that a V8 would solve many of the current problems related to weight and maneuverability of the cars.
“Let’s change the engine back to a V8,” he stated emphatically. According to him, a V8 would be more fun to drive, lighter, and better in all racing situations.
Additionally, to address the current overtaking system, which relies on the use of DRS (Drag Reduction System), Verstappen suggests implementing a system of “push to overtake” similar to that of IndyCar. He believes this would prevent overtakes from being too easy and give pilots more control, allowing for bolder maneuvers.
“If we need a small battery for a push, we won’t need DRS anymore,” he explained, arguing that a manual “push to overtake” system would be sufficient to ensure exciting overtakes. Verstappen emphasizes that currently, DRS can be excessively powerful in certain situations, which adds to his proposal for changes.
Although Formula 1 anticipates a return to V8 engines by 2030, Verstappen has already made it clear what his vision for the competition is. “In my ideal world, V8, V10, but I think it will be more of a V8, would be much more fun to drive,” the driver concluded, excited about his idea of a system that recaptures the essence of classic competition.
