Shane van Gisbergen has demonstrated his potential in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, achieving a commendable third place in the competition held last Saturday at the North Wilkesboro Speedway. This race was only his fourth appearance in the championship, and the third on an oval circuit.
After a qualifying session where he finished in 19th position, Van Gisbergen maintained a steady pace throughout the race. His skill was evident during the final stage, where he accelerated strongly, finishing in third place, thus matching his best position on an oval in NASCAR, which he had previously achieved in Atlanta.
The driver of the Spire Motorsports team demonstrated a great racing line, accompanied by teammates Chase Elliott and Carson Hocevar. “Thanks to my experience and the work with a great team, we achieved a fantastic result. My crew chief, Bono Manion, did an excellent job with the truck,” he commented after the race.
At the start of the last phase of the race, Van Gisbergen was in 11th position. The driver opted for the lower line of the circuit, advancing significantly and surpassing notable names like the current champion, Corey Heim, and his teammate Elliott. With 55 laps remaining, Van Gisbergen managed to enter the top five and, although he could catch Christian Eckes for third place, he did not make his overtaking dangerous against the Front Row Motorsports drivers at the front.
The victory went to Chandler Smith, who set a record for the largest winning margin in a NASCAR Truck short track race, with an advantage of 8.4 seconds over his teammate, Layne Riggs. Van Gisbergen finished just two seconds behind Riggs, ending up as the best Spire driver.
With this result, Van Gisbergen has achieved a top 5 in each of the three national NASCAR divisions in which he has competed. His day doesn’t end here, as he will also participate in the NASCAR Cup at North Wilkesboro, where he will start in 8th position after qualifying was canceled due to rain. Currently, the driver is 31 points above the Chase cutoff with six races remaining to finish the regular season.
