David Coulthard, former Formula 1 driver, has compared Kimi Raikkonen’s strategy in developing his son Robin with Jos Verstappen’s approach with his son Max. This reflection comes after Robin, just 11 years old, has signed with the Red Bull Junior team.

Recently, Red Bull announced that Robin Raikkonen will join their driver development program, intending to start working with them from 2027. Among the former students of this program are prominent names like Max Verstappen, Sebastian Vettel, Carlos Sainz, Pierre Gasly, Arvid Lindblad, and Daniel Ricciardo.

In an episode of the podcast Up To Speed, Coulthard explained that Raikkonen is adopting a very practical approach, similar to what Jos Verstappen had with Max. “He [Robin] is excelling in the world of karting. His family has decided to move from Switzerland to Italy to be close to the karting track. She will compete every day,” Coulthard commented.

Furthermore, he emphasized that Robin and his support network are creating the ideal conditions for a young driver. “They are developing, so to speak, the best scenario for the young driver with more experience. It is worth noting, however, that some of the best karting drivers do not manage to transition to cars, as it is a different vehicle dynamic,” he added.

Regarding Robin’s qualities, Coulthard observed: “The boy is winning in karting and seems like a good kid. Some children show a certain arrogance, but he does not. His parents are humble, and this will play an important role in his future.”

Finally, he highlighted that adolescence can lead to significant changes in the behavior of young drivers and stressed the importance of maintaining focus and determination to face the challenges of racing.
