Alex Marquez, rider of Gresini Racing, has shared his impressions about the strange accident that interrupted the practice session of the Austrian Grand Prix. The incident occurred when the Spanish rider had exited turn 1 of the Spielberg circuit and lost control of his bike after a small wheelie, falling hard to the ground.
The crash, which took place with less than 15 minutes remaining in the session, halted action and reduced the time for the rest of the riders to under 12 minutes. Marquez, who emerged unscathed, managed to recover from the incident and set a competitive time with his spare bike once the session resumed.
The rider explained that a problem with the brakes had caused the fall. “The brakes are always at the limit here and sometimes they lock up a bit. At that moment, they were a bit locked”, commented Marquez. “It was the first lap of my stint, and there are a lot of wheelies here, so when the front wheel comes back to the ground, everything has to be perfect to avoid falling”.
After the fall, Marquez commented: “It’s not a nice accident because you don’t expect it and your body isn’t prepared for that. But everything is fine”. Additionally, he had another incident during the morning when he had to leave the track due to a problem with his bike’s fairing.
Despite the setbacks, Marquez remained optimistic and emphasized the importance of consistency throughout the weekend. “It’s not how the weekend starts, but how it finishes. We will try to turn the situation around”.
