The recent Austrian Grand Prix has stood out for the significant updates introduced by the Red Bull team, which, according to former mechanic Calum Nicholas, could be compared to a ‘B-spec’ car. This improvement, moreover, could be related to a hidden weight reduction plan that has contributed to the rebirth of the vehicle’s performance.
Red Bull arrived at the Red Bull Ring with an expanded list of novelties. The official FIA documentation listed seven modifications mainly focused on improving aerodynamic flow. The updates included changes to the side intakes, engine cover, upper and lower floors, rear corners, and rear suspension fairings.
In the team’s official podcast ‘Talking Bull’, Nicholas commented on the extent of the changes. He indicated that ‘the FIA documentation shows that most of the changes are aimed at flow condition. It all revolves around extracting the maximum aerodynamic load and making the car more efficient.’
The mechanic, now an ambassador for Red Bull, added that the modifications are significant. ‘From the side intakes to the engine cover, the floor and rear corners, there are many changes. It really looks like a B-spec car.’
However, Nicholas wonders if most of the performance increase from the drivers is the result of a weight loss program. ‘We know that we started the year with excessive weight. I wonder how much the upgrades have contributed to gaining time.’
This approach to weight reduction is considered vital in motorsport, as finding small gains can make a difference. Through this update package, Red Bull has managed to secure second place for Max Verstappen, while Isack Hadjar finished sixth, accumulating a total of 26 points for the team in this GP.
