Rafael Camara has triumphed in his first race in the Formula 2 category at the Barcelona circuit, thanks to a smart strategic decision by his team, Invicta Racing. This victory not only represents a significant moment in his career but also redefines the championship dynamics.
In second place, Nikola Tsolov has managed to lead the championship standings after finishing the race ahead of his main rival, Gabriele Mini. Mini was just a tenth off the podium, losing third place to Alex Dunne.
Dunne got off to a strong start, stealing the lead from Camara at the first corner. Behind them, Rafael Villagomez from Van Amersfoort Racing made a brave overtaking move to take third position.
The race faced a setback when Oliver Goethe from MP Motorsport stopped at the pit entrance, triggering the safety car and bunching up the group at the end of the first lap.
After two neutral laps, Dunne maintained the lead while Tsolov started to drop in the standings, waiting for a better moment to pit with hard tires. On lap eleven, the first stops occurred, with Villagomez and Dino Beganovic stopping at the same time as the leader, Dunne.
Camara stayed on track longer but eventually made his stop around lap 13, returning to the competition in a contested position. Tsolov, after a similar strategy, began to advance positions, placing himself in fourth.
With eight laps to go, Camara passed Mini and launched into pursuit of Dunne. Thanks to the DRS, he effectively reclaimed the lead. Tsolov, who had also just exited the pits, overtook both Villagomez and Beganovic, placing himself in third.
In the final moments of the race, Tsolov managed to pass Mini in a crucial maneuver for his title challenge. With Camara noticeably ahead, Tsolov attempted to reach Dunne, successfully defending against attacks within the track until achieving second place.
Ultimately, Camara took the victory with a time of 58m35.839s, followed by Tsolov at +9.851s and Dunne at +12.406s. Mini rounded out the top four, while Laurens Van Hoepen made a spectacular comeback to surpass Beganovic and finish fifth.
