The team principal of McLaren, Andrea Stella, has expressed his deep disappointment following the collision between drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri during the sprint of the Singapore Grand Prix in Formula 1. The incident occurred on the last lap when Norris attempted an overtake on the inside of turn 5, colliding with Piastri’s car.
The British driver’s tactic did not prove effective, and both vehicles ended up spinning, leaving Piastri out of the race with significant damage to his McLaren MCL40. Despite the race stewards deciding not to penalize either driver, the financial damage and loss of points for the team were evident.
Stella, disenchanted with the situation, stated: ‘Seeing two McLarens harm each other is simply unacceptable’. He promised to address the issue with the drivers in a private meeting, emphasizing that the team’s interest should always come above individual ambitions.
Piastri revealed that Norris had immediately apologized after the incident, stressing that the situation should not have occurred. ‘It’s not the first time this has happened to us, but we both have the ability to apologize and move on, and that’s what makes us stronger as a team’, he commented.
Norris, for his part, acknowledged that both he and Piastri could have acted differently, but also indicated that they were very aware that such incidents are detrimental to the team. ‘Nobody is happy with what happened, but now we need to look forward’, he concluded.
