Niels Koolen, 25-year-old Dutch driver, has reached an agreement with Abel Motorsports to participate in the 2027 Indy NXT season. After two years behind the wheel of the Chip Ganassi Racing team, Koolen is starting a new chapter in his professional career.
The preparation for the new campaign will begin with the Chris Griffis Memorial tests at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on October 16. Subsequently, the driver will also participate in an additional testing session at Barber Motorsports Park, scheduled for November 9.
Koolen expressed his satisfaction with the new addition: ‘I am very happy to be part of Abel Motorsports for the 2027 season. I have had the opportunity to work with Bill Abel, John Brunner, and the team, and we hope to create synergies to prepare ourselves as best as possible for the new season.’
In addition to testing in the United States, Koolen will maintain an active schedule during the winter. He will participate in the Asian Le Mans Series competing in the LMP2 category, which will allow him to gain more experience before the start of the 2027 season.
The team director, John Brunner, expressed the team’s excitement over Koolen’s arrival. ‘We are very excited to have Niels with us. We have been following his evolution and believe that together we can achieve great milestones this season.’
