Mercedes leads the constructors’ championship of Formula 1 2026 with authority, holding a 145-point advantage over its nearest rival. The team director, Toto Wolff, describes this difference as a “nice cushion,” which allows focus on the development of the vehicle for 2027.

After a challenging period with the new regulations of the ground effect era, the Silver Arrows have achieved excellent performance in the current season, dominating the standings both in constructors and with driver Kimi Antonelli, who leads the drivers’ championship.

So far, Mercedes has managed to win 10 of the 14 races this season, despite the efforts of rivals like Ferrari and McLaren, who have introduced multiple improvements to their vehicles. However, the German team has conducted partial updates, the most recent during the Canadian Grand Prix in May, and is preparing to debut a new package of parts at the Bahrain Grand Prix next month.

The development of the 2027 unit began a few months ago, as confirmed by Wolff, who stated that resources have already been reallocated to follow a strategic plan independent of the situation in the championship. “The 2027 season started some time ago, before the summer. During the summer, we made the resource shift towards next year, and this approach will continue,” Wolff commented after Antonelli’s victory in the first Grand Prix of Spain held in Madrin.

With the current season ongoing, Mercedes finds itself in a comfortable position, although Wolff advocates for caution, reminding that any unexpected incident can cause the advantage to evaporate quickly. “What seemed like a nice cushion can become a problem if we are retired twice in a row,” said the team director.

In the context of the championship, Mercedes has improvements ready to debut in the next Grand Prix, with Wolff expressing confidence in these updates. “We are bringing a solid upgrade to Malaysia. We hope it works well and keeps us competitive with the others,” he added.
