Christian Lundgaard, Arrow McLaren driver, achieved a tough second place at the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio, after leading the race from pole until a personal error on lap 42 allowed his teammate, Pato O’Ward, to take command of the race.
The 24-year-old Dane led for 41 of the 90 laps at the Mid-Ohio circuit, but his race turned when he struggled with the rear of his Chevrolet number 7 during lap 42.
A decisive moment
The key moment of the race came on lap 42. Lundgaard, facing an increasingly unstable car, made an error in turn 2 that allowed O’Ward to rapidly close the gap and take the lead in turn 5, a lead he would not relinquish. Despite the intense competition, Lundgaard chose to keep the fight clean among teammates.
“In the end, it was my mistake,” Lundgaard admitted. “I was having a lot of trouble with the car’s entry. This situation happened three times before that lap. And, of course, I wanted to be a good teammate. I could have run him off the track in turn 4 if I had wanted. I didn’t. We fought. We touched. I think that’s always a good show.”
Extreme conditions
The race, marked by extreme summer weather, pushed the drivers to their physical limits. Lundgaard explained that the team had anticipated a switch to a more understeering behavior from the car, but an excessive adjustment in the setup caused the Chevrolet to be much more unstable than they had expected.
“Very, very difficult. But in the end, it doesn’t matter how hard it is to drive the car,” he added. “I still believe we’ve maximized what we could do today, which is always rewarding.”
Despite not being able to achieve victory, the second place is Lundgaard’s best result at the Lexington, Ohio circuit, further bolstering his 2026 campaign, with two second places and five podiums overall during the season.
