Luca Corberi handed 15-years ban on FIA/ASN related events

Luca Corberi, FIA

The disgraced karter Luca Corberi has been handed a 15-years ban – for direct/indirect participation – from any FIA/ASN related events.

During the World Final of FIA Karting Championship at Lonato kart track, Corberi – racing in the senior category last year – crashed out after a tussle with rival  Paolo Ippolito, where the latter was also disqualified from the event.

Post the crash, Corberi – in anger – threw his kart’s front fairing to the track towards other drivers who were still competing, with the main aim to hit Ippolito. He then crossed the track several times at different spots, in the middle of the race, disobeying the instructions given to him by the officials.

Post-race, when the winner was celebrating his win, Corberi rushed towards Ippolito and physically attacked him in parc ferme, where the team was involved too. In the time after, he was suspended, with his license taken away by the Italian federation.

It was inevitable that his case would end up at the FIA International Court, where the decision was finally taken to ban him from any direct/indirect involvement in FIA/ASN related events for the next 15 years – starting from the date of judgement.

The International Tribunal – who took the eventual decision – was presided over by Mr Rui Botica Santos, Mr Xavier Bone Matheu, Mr Patrick Raedersdorf and Mrs Waltraud Wunsch. Corberi and his team can appeal the decision still within seven days.

The judgement included:

[1] The Suspension deprives, for a specified period of time, the person subject to it of the right to take part, directly or indirectly and in any capacity whatsoever, in (i) any Competition organised or regulated by the FIA or the ASNs (or placed under their authority), and (ii) any preparatory testing and training organised or regulated by the FIA or the ASNs (or placed under their authority) or organised by their members or licence‐holders.

[2] Ban on taking part or exercising a role, directly or indirectly, in competitions, events or championships organised directly or indirectly on behalf of or by the FIA, or subject to the regulations and decisions of the FIA.

[3] Ban on exercising within the FIA any duties whatsoever as an executive officer, a member of a commission, or a president of a commission, or any duties of any nature whatsoever on behalf of the FIA and/or within a body of the FIA.
