Charles Leclerc tried an approach in Azerbaijan GP, which he will not repeat in Singapore GP where he expects warmer conditions to help Ferrari.
Post the Azerbaijan GP weekend, Ferrari’s Leclerc revealed of trying a different setup during the weekend as opposed to one he found success in before. But it didn’t work out as he faltered in qualifying and eventually paid the price being in a DRS train in the F1 grand prix.
He finished at the fag end of the Top 10 and eventually understood that the setup was not the correct one. He clarified that it was something that he used in Baku and won’t use in Singapore. “I did, but I already have the answers as of why,” started Leclerc when speaking to media.
“And yeah, I did change my approach in terms of setup in Baku, and considering how strong I was in the past, I’m not sure what made me think this was a good idea. Then I kind of lost the rhythm in qualifying. I went back to where I should be a bit more, feeling better for qualifying. But then there was a mistake happening, so I couldn’t show that.
“So all in all, it was a very messy weekend, and I’ll look back into it in order to not do the same mistakes going forward. I think it was more approach for Baku in particular, set-up wise. I don’t think that it will apply anywhere else but yeah,” summed up Leclerc, who feels the warmer conditions in Singapore should help Ferrari.
As known, the cold condition helps the likes of Mercedes, while Ferrari fares better in hotter conditions. “Warmer conditions than Baku, for sure,” continued Leclerc. “I mean, I think our car is struggling quite a bit, whenever it’s cold and we have seen that the Mercedes is performing very, very strongly whenever it’s cold.
“In Baku qualifying, they were one of the only cars that were cool to actually make the medium work in Q3, together with Williams actually, which are both cars very strong in cold conditions. We are stronger in hot conditions, which I hope Singapore will give us that.”
