The Spanish rider Joan Mir will not participate in the upcoming Austrian GP of MotoGP, after suffering various physical problems during the last race in Misano. Honda has confirmed that the health status of the 2020 champion will require more medical attention.

Mir experienced concerning symptoms during the San Marino GP, including severe migraines and a marked lack of energy. After finishing 20th in the sprint race, the rider attempted to compete on Sunday, but his condition did not improve. He had to retire after five laps, acknowledging that he could not complete the race.

After some medical tests in Barcelona, Mir’s team has detected “altered parameters” in his blood, which has led to the decision to withdraw him from competition in Austria. Doctors have recommended that he focus on his recovery and not compete this weekend.

Goal of returning for the Japanese GP

With an eye on the future, both Mir and Honda hope that the rider can return for the Japanese GP, which will be the next race after Austria, a prominent event for the Japanese manufacturer.

Mir’s absence will allow Takaaki Nakagami, current test rider for HRC, to take his place on his RC213V during the competition in Spielberg. Nakagami, who recently participated in tests in Mugello, had remained in Austria for a scheduled test on the Monday after the race and will now have a full weekend of competition to continue developing the bike.

This opportunity will also serve as preparation for his upcoming appearance as a wildcard rider at Motegi, the race where Honda hopes Mir will return.
