Pato O’Ward, driver for the Arrow McLaren team, has expressed his disappointment over the lack of initiatives to organize an IndyCar race in Mexico, at the moment that a race in Barcelona has been confirmed for the 2027 calendar. O’Ward has emphasized that a project of this magnitude can only succeed if there is a collective effort and a genuine commitment from all involved.
Despite the geographical proximity, organizing a race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez seems distant. The Mexican driver has underscored that the rapid agreement process in Barcelona highlights the difference between a project driven by collective enthusiasm and the financial obstacles that hinder the Mexican market.
“As we have seen now that we are going to Barcelona, it can be seen how an agreement can be closed quickly when the city or the circuit really wants the IndyCar“, O’Ward stated. He believes that what is important is not just moving vehicles and teams, but creating an event that is strategically viable for everyone.
O’Ward pointed out that IndyCar in Mexico could achieve success comparable to that of Formula 1, recalling precedents like CART with Adrián Fernández. “The potential is enormous; IndyCar in Mexico can be a phenomenon similar to what Formula 1 was in the past”, he asserted.
Additionally, he highlighted that the main obstacle lies in the mindset of the parties involved in the negotiations, as well as the lack of genuine commitment. “We need everyone involved to be passionate about bringing the series here, not just looking for their salary. The most important thing is to form a group of people who are truly committed to the success of this project”, he concluded.
