Honda Racing Corporation USA (HRC US) has expressed its support for Porsche Motorsport’s request for a swift advancement in the regulations of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and IMSA concerning hypercars and GTP for 2030. The recently appointed president, Kelvin Fu, highlighted that it is urgent to establish clear guidelines to enable proper planning for their future involvement in these competitions.

Fu, who has taken the reins from what was previously led by David Salters, revealed that Honda is paying attention to the current discussions among the FIA, ACO, and IMSA. This attention is necessary, particularly after the cessation of its program with Acura in IMSA, due to the costs of upgrading its LMDh vehicles.

Porsche’s director, Thomas Laudenbach, stated that he expects a detailed technical framework before Christmas 2026. Fu, in line with this urgency, indicated that Acura needs a similar timeline to assess its future in sports car competitions. The need for design and approval of internal budgets requires a clear response within the appropriate timeframe.

Fu emphasized that the conception of future regulations will determine when manufacturers must commit resources. The uncertainty regarding whether the 2030 formula will be a completely new design or evolve from existing LMDh and LMH platforms is one of the main challenges for interested brands.

Clarity over the next year is essential for manufacturers. Fu stated that they need to define their strategy by early 2028, which will include budget allocation and justification of their expenses.

Criteria for Acura’s competition commitment

HRC US has identified three fundamental criteria to evaluate future technical platforms: competitiveness, technological relevance, and alignment with the manufacturer’s production vehicle strategy. Fu explained that each series is analyzed with these clear criteria.

Hybrid technology is a crucial pillar in the road vehicle range, making high-level hybrid competition a vital aspect of Acura’s GTP program as well as Honda’s participation in IndyCar. Maintaining design freedom and ensuring controlled costs are also factors that will remain key in the new regulations.

With these new regulations, the aim is to ensure economic sustainability for manufacturers by prohibiting evolutionary updates and guaranteeing a five-year competition period for the same investment.
