Lewis Hamilton explains why he didn’t post anything regarding his Mercedes contract on his social media and insists one-year F1 deal is best in current time.

It was a delayed signing and announcement from Mercedes with regards to Hamilton and his contract for the 2021 F1 season. Amid talks of two and three years, it was revealed to be a plain one-year contact, with nothing in disguise of a 1+1 situation, even.

While Mercedes had the usual posts on social media along with F1, Hamilton shied away from doing so. Speaking to media at the launch, the Brit noted that it was a conscious step from the seven-time world champion, at a time when the world is facing so many issues.

“It wasn’t the easiest of breaks as I continue to be conscious of what’s happening in the world, and posting pictures to celebrate things such as a contract being signed is not important to me,” said Hamilton to media including FormulaRapida.net.

“That’s not a message I want to be sending out to people who are losing family members, who are struggling in the pandemic. I was focused on my recovery, getting myself back to full strength, getting the deal done and working on some personal relationships that I have,” he summed up, as Hamilton added that one-year deal works best for him.

He noted that one-year contract doesn’t mean that he won’t be invested into the F1 season, as his goal remains to win the championship and along with it, raise awareness and help as many, who are facing social problems around the globe.

“I’m fully invested in this season, and I still love what I do,” said Hamilton “I’m just in a fortunate position where I don’t have to commit to multiple years, so I chose to have a one year deal so that I can see how the year goes, and where we’re at mid-year or toward the end of the year. Who knows whether or not we’ll still be in the pandemic, [for example].

“I’m still very committed to the sport, but what I’m really focused on is trying to make sure that the discussion continues on this diversity issue, which still remains an issue to this day, and it’s not gonna change overnight. What’s really important is to make sure we’re actually delivering and actually taking action.

“I’m really proud of my team here, who I am already seeing [taking] steps. We already made steps last year, starting to see that progress little by little. That’s kind of my driving force this year: to make sure that we continue to push for accountability and on top of that hopefully I can deliver some good performances,” summed up Hamilton.
