Mercedes’ decision to impose an engine penalty on George Russell during the Singapore Grand Prix has sparked debate and criticism. Naomi Schiff, former W Series driver and Sky Sports analyst, has expressed her reservations about this strategy during the popular podcast Up To Speed.
According to Schiff, the Marina Bay circuit is not the ideal setting for a recovery from the back of the grid, especially after Russell has exceeded his power unit quota. This penalty is a consequence of a failure he suffered during the Bahrain Grand Prix, which forced his retirement.
Schiff commented: “I understand that he has run out of available engines, but I am surprised that the penalty is applied here. There are other races that could have resulted more favorably for a recovery, like Austin, which is not far away and has long straights where he could overtake more easily”.
Additionally, this race includes a sprint qualifying, which will limit the practice time before qualifying, adding an extra complication for Russell this weekend. Currently, Russell’s teammate, Kimi Antonelli, leads the championship with 320 points, while Russell is second with 236 points and Lewis Hamilton is third with 214 points.
