General Motors has announced its entry in F1 as power unit manufacturer from 2028 onward where it will supply units to Andretti Cadillac.
In a surprising announcement, General Motors announced itself as a power unit manufacturer in F1 starting from the 2028 season after registering with the FIA. This move will see them provide power unit to potential Andretti Cadillac entry.
The American outfit is the final stage of the entry process initiated by the FIA for a new F1 entry to be the 11th team on the grid. It beat several other entries to pass the governing body’s scrutiny and is now in talks with the Formula One Management.
The commercials are being discussed with the final approval in the hands of the FOM. Once done, Andretti Cadillac will join the grid from 2026 season. For starters, they will have to partner with some other power unit manufacturer before 2028.
“We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit,” said General Motors President Mark Reuss. “With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team.
“We will run with the very best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for race fans around the world.” General Motors has noted about development and testing of prototype technology already.
With the announcement from General Motors, it makes the American giants the seventh power unit manufacturer to be in F1 from 2028 onward alongside the already confirmed Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault, Red Bull/Ford, Audi and Honda.
