The Argentine driver Franco Colapinto has been at the center of controversy after receiving two penalties during the recent Dutch Grand Prix Formula 1 race. These sanctions have provoked a strong reaction from both the driver and Sean Summers, an executive of Mercado Libre, the company that sponsors his team, Alpine.
Colapinto was penalized for an infraction related to the yellow flags that were activated after an accident involving Max Verstappen. While attempting to overtake Yuki Tsunoda, the Japanese team’s driver was caught off guard by the situation, which ended with a pit lane penalty. This decision ended his points chances in the race after starting with a strong performance, placing himself among the top ten.
In post-race statements, Colapinto expressed his displeasure: ‘The pit lane penalty compromised our entire race. I had a great start and was in points. The criticism did not only come from Colapinto. Sean Summers, the Marketing Executive of Mercado Libre, expressed his frustration on social media, tagging the FIA’s official agreement, highlighting that ‘the officials are destroying the integrity of F1.’ His post quickly made waves, delivering a strong message regarding the perceived incompetence in the officials’ decision.
Mercado Libre has supported Colapinto since his debut with the Williams team in 2024 and has continued to stand by him after his joining Alpine, becoming one of his main sponsors.
Finally, Colapinto finished the race in a disappointing 14th position, driving an older version of the Alpine car, while his teammate Pierre Gasly piloted the latest update of the A526 model.
