Sergio Pérez has expressed his frustration over the lack of progress from the Cadillac Racing team in their first season in Formula 1. Currently, Cadillac sits in last place in the championship, having not scored any points after 11 races.
Despite the expectations surrounding their debut, the 2.5-second gap to leading teams has remained consistent, even after significant upgrades to the MAC-26 platform, including a major improvement during the Austrian Grand Prix. Furthermore, rivals like Aston Martin have surpassed Cadillac with a new chassis in the latest event in Hungary.
Pérez, anticipating the trip to Budapest, warned about his team’s difficulty in advancing: ‘It has been very complicated, and we need to rethink our processes. We haven’t developed as much as we need to, and it’s essential in Formula 1.’ He also pointed out the need to improve their efficiency in development, as they currently rely on external suppliers for many of the car’s parts.
The Mexican driver explained that being a newcomer in the championship puts them in a complicated situation compared to more experienced teams. ‘We don’t have a clear process in place, whereas other teams have established their development mechanisms,’ he commented.
Pérez emphasized that the start of a new regulatory cycle makes effective development crucial. Therefore, the team led by Graeme Lowdon is working on new updates for the second half of the season, aiming to improve their performances before their second year in the championship.
‘Right now, it’s a time to start focusing on next year,’ Pérez concluded. ‘No one in the team is satisfied with our current situation, and we are determined to achieve a stronger development process that gives us confidence for future competitions.’
