Trident’s Ralph Boschung will not compete in FIA Formula 2 (F2) Championship unless his budget issues is sorted and he has the financial backing to race.
It has been an up and down career for Boschung as despite the talent, the Swiss racer hasn’t had a consistent run at tge top of the junior F1 ladder due to budget constraints, which has derailed his career more often than not.
Since moving into GP3 and then F2, Boschung hasn’t been able to complete a full year in the championship. He had similar issues in 2016 in GP3 with Koiranen GP. He moved to F2 in 2017 with Campos Racing and couldn’t compete in the final round.
A move to MP Motorsport in 2018 saw him miss the final two rounds and now in 2019 with Trident, he is likely to miss seven rounds unless he makes a return. “Unfortunately I will not race any longer in F2,” said Boschung on the eve of the Austria weekend.
“It’s a shame that money is the major factor in this sport. I’ve been fighting so hard for so long. But expect me to fight back hard. I’m not giving up just yet. Thanks to everyone for the support. I really appreciate it.”
The Swiss racer was named in the pre-weekend F2 entry list alongside Giuliano Alesi, with Trident also keeping him in their race preview. However, this looks like a last-minute change, which is yet to be formally confirmed by F2 and Trident.
In the five rounds so far, Boschung has had two points finishes, while teammate Alesi has one points finish. One of the report suggests America’s Ryan Tveter as his replacement for the Red Bull Ring weekend, who raced for Trident in GP3 in 2017 and 2018.
Boschung will be the third driver change for the weekend with Dorian Boccolacci having a similar issue with Arjun Maini taking his Campos seat alongside Jack Aitken for two rounds. MP Motorsport has roped in Patricio O’Ward for suspended Mahaveer Raghunathan.
UPDATE: Moments after FormulaRapida.net’s story, the confirmation from F2 and Trident came regarding Tveter replacing Bosching for Red Bull Ring weekend. “I am incredibly excited to be back with the Trident family again and am so grateful for the opportunity to make my debut in FIA Formula 2 this weekend in Austria.
“Together we have achieved some pretty remarkable results over the last two seasons and I thank Trident for showing their continued confidence in me. It’s been a bit of a long wait since my first F2 test in Abu Dhabi last year, but as you can imagine, I’m beyond excited to get back out on track,” summed up Tveter.
Giacomo Ricci, Trident Team Manager added: “I’m really happy to announce that Ryan will return to a grand prix weekend wearing the Trident Team colours in Spielberg. It could not be otherwise, given the strong bond that exists between Ryan and the team.
“We will give one hundred percent plus to provide Ryan with a car to the calibre of the results we know he can deliver.” It looks like Tveter will remain with the team for the remainder of the 2019 season, but it depends on Boschung’s situation.
