Aleix Espargaró, test and development rider for Honda in MotoGP, is preparing for a surgical intervention this Wednesday in Barcelona after suffering a fracture in his T3 and T4 vertebrae during a private training session in Sepang.

Espargaró had a serious accident last Tuesday, the first day of a three-day test to improve Honda’s RC213V. The rider was hospitalized at the Aurelius Hospital University of Nilai, very close to the circuit, until Sunday.

After returning to Barcelona, he was admitted to the Dexeus-Quirón University Hospital, where several medical tests concluded that surgery was the best option to address his injury.

Dr. Bartolomé Fiol Busquets, an expert in neurological surgery of the cervical and lumbar spine, will lead the operation, which will also focus on two other vertebrae that, although apparently not broken, showed damage.

On his social media, Espargaró expressed his gratitude for the support received and stated that he is determined to recover well: “This time has been brutal… but we will fight and be positive as always!”

His return to competition is not expected immediately, leaving a gap in the Honda team that will need to adapt to his absence.
