Campos Racing has announced Sebastian Fernandez as its first driver signing for the 2019 FIA Formula 3 Championship.

Fernandez has joined Spanish outfit Campos to compete in the inaugural F3 season which will run as a support event to Formula 1 and Formula 2 Championships from 2019 onward. The Venezuelan is the first driver to be named by the Spanish outfit.

“I’m happy to join the Campos Racing family to make my debut in the new FIA Formula 3 championship,” he said. “We need to keep working in order to fulfil our agenda and the goals that we have set for ourselves.

“It’s important to continue our learning process towards Formula 1. I would like to thank Adrián and Adri for the opportunity to drive for their team. I’m sure it will benefit each and every one of us.”

Team boss Adrian Campos added: “We were pleasantly surprised by Sebas in Abu Dhabi and I’m sure he will complete an amazing season surprising everybody. It’s such a pleasure to have such a talent join our team.”

Fernandez made his single-seater debut in 2016 while competing in the Formula 4 series in Italy, Germany and UAE. He graduated to European F3 in 2018 with Motopark where as a rookie he finished 21st with five points.

He scored 102.5 points to end up 11th in the rookie standings. Fernandez had tested with Campos in the post-2018 test in Abu Dhabi in a GP3 car where he did a sound job to impress the Spanish outfit.
