After claiming the championship lead at the Hungaroring last week, ART’s Alex Albon took pole position at the Hockenheimring this morning ahead of teammate and main championship rival Charles Leclerc.

In the hot conditions it was Leclerc who held provisional pole – the Ferrari Driver Academy member having had his third outing in Formula 1 machinery yesterday for Haas F1 – his time of 1:29.185 enough in the opening laps to sit on top of the timing screen.

By halfway through the session, Leclerc had been toppled Albon and Boschung, the latter of which failed to make any significant improvements after that and finished in P15.

It came down to the final laps for Albon to secure pole position, battling with Schothorst to the chequered flag. Leclerc had the potential to pip his teammate to the top, however a self-confessed driver error sent the Monegasque driver into the gravel. Arden’s Jake Dennis put himself in good stead for this afternoon’s race finishing third, less than a tenth off the time of Leclerc.
