Scuderia Ferrari has brought forward its second power unit by two F1 races for the Spanish GP instead of Canadian GP.
Its been a tough start to its 2019 F1 campaign, where Ferrari have looked to score well but haven’t attained the results it wanted still. Instead, Mercedes has eked out four consecutive 1-2 finishes to have a commanding 74 points lead now.
As the push for performance continues, Ferrari had its first upgrade in Azerbaijan GP. This weekend in Spanish GP, the Italian manufacturer will have its second power unit already, which they are bringing it forward by two races after the scheduled one for Canada.
“It’s time for the Spanish GP, traditionally a race where most of the teams bring some updates, therefore we can expect to see a step up in performance from our competitors,” said Mattia Binotto in the press release ahead of the Spanish GP.
“We are currently behind in the championship and we have to catch up, which we know means that our development work will be the key to this season. Having brought a new aerodynamic package to Baku, we will also bring some developments in this area to Barcelona.
“On top of that, we will have a new power unit that we are introducing ahead of schedule, as the second specification was due to be brought to Canada. Shell, in close collaboration with our team, has developed a different formulation of race lubricant that will also be introduced with the new power unit, delivering increased performance.
“It’s only down to a big team effort with everyone pushing hard to make up ground that we have been able to bring these developments forward.” Spanish GP is generally the weekend where teams bring certain upgrades but Ferrari’s second unit is clear intention of a push.
Various reports from Italian and German media also stated of the fact that Sebastian Vettel spent days at Maranello between Azerbaijan and Spain – although normal to do – but the German worked on the simulator testing the new upgrades.
