Kimi Antonelli, driver for Mercedes, saw his chances of victory at the British Grand Prix fade due to a mechanical failure, despite being very close to achieving a great performance.
Antonelli opted to extend his pit stop, delaying it by 10 laps compared to Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. Before the incident, the young Italian driver was chasing Leclerc when an aerodynamic component of his vehicle failed after hitting the curbs out of Copse.
After the damage, Antonelli lost several positions, and the team considered retiring him. However, he continued until the end, crossing the line in ninth position, but was subsequently downgraded to sixteenth place due to a five-second penalty for repeated track limit infringements.
Mercedes director Toto Wolff pointed out that his team’s simulations indicated Antonelli could have caught Leclerc with six laps to go, thus setting up an epic finish for the race. Wolff commented: “It would have been a spectacular race finish. He would have caught Charles with a huge tire advantage.”
Wolff considered that, given the situation, it is possible Formula 1 may review its approach to track limit penalties after the damage suffered by Antonelli.
On the other hand, Kimi’s teammate George Russell secured second place, increasing Mercedes’ points in a race that also benefited from Max Verstappen‘s retirement and Ferrari’s decision to stop Lewis Hamilton.
Nonetheless, Antonelli, despite suffering his second scoreless race of the season, maintains the lead in the drivers’ championship with a 25-point advantage over Russell. Mercedes continues to lead the constructors’ standings with 78 points over Ferrari.
